Wrangell, Alaska

Wrangell, Alaska Twice touched by gold rushes in the late 1800s, Wrangell has retained its frontier appearance with false-fronted buildings along downtown's Front Street.

This waterfront town is a central hub for goods, services and transportation for outlying areas; the harbor is busy with a large fleet of tugs and commercial fishing vessels. It is off the beaten path for those visitors wanting a change from the fast-paced, larger cities.

Chief Shakes Island and Community House was built by Tlingit Indians, who were the first to inhabit the area. This tribal house, located on the island in the center of the harbor, is accessible by boardwalk and features totems and other cultural items.

Wrangell, Alaska Ancient carvings on rock faces are located at Petroglyph Beach, within walking distance from downtown. In addition, Wrangell's Totem Park features six totems.

Surrounding attractions include the LeConte and Shake glaciers; the Stikine River Delta, a bird watcher's paradise; and Anan Creek bear and wildlife observatory. Flightseeing and jetboat excursions are available to the glaciers and other attractions on the Stikine River. Located north of Wrangell and accessible by boat, birders and sightseers may spot migrating waterfowl, eagles, moose and bears. The largest spring concentration of eagles in North America occurs on the Delta in April. The only developed bear observatory in Southeast Alaska is located at Anan Creek, about 24 miles southeast of Wrangell (accessible by boat or floatplane only).
